Because three to four hours of an engineer's time is what makes the quote worth having, and it comes straight off your installation price if you go ahead. Most firms that charge for a survey ask between £250 and £375. Ours is £180. Plenty of companies advertise a free survey — but it isn't free, the cost simply sits inside the installation price instead, and a visit that has to pay for itself tends to be a short one aimed at a sale. Paying for it means the time gets spent properly: a real heat loss calculation, a proper look at your radiators and pipework, and as long as you want with someone who has been doing this for twelve years. That last part is what most people say they valued. We hear “the other guy didn't tell me that” more often than we'd like. How it works: go ahead and the full £180 comes off your installation. If we arrive and can see straight away that the property isn't suitable, or that it isn't a job for us, we don't start the survey and half comes back — £90 — because we have made the trip and given you a straight answer but not done the work. If we do carry out the full survey and the answer turns out to be that a heat pump isn't right for your home, that's still £180: the work is the same either way, and you get a proper explanation of why. And if you simply decide not to go ahead, the survey and the design are yours to keep — take them to another installer if you want to. The £180 covers work that has already been done.

A typical heat pump and cylinder installation starts from £12,500 before any grant, depending on the size of the home and the system needed. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off that — or £9,000 if you're replacing an oil or LPG boiler off the gas grid — so most installs land at around £5,000, and around £3,500 off the gas grid. Your price is fixed after the survey, not before.

Your DNO — Distribution Network Operator — is the company that owns the electricity network in your area. That's not your energy supplier: it's whoever owns the poles, the cables and the main fuse where the supply comes into your home. They need to know a heat pump is going in, so the supply to your home is right for it. We apply before the installation goes ahead — you don't need to do anything. It's part of the job, the same as the grant application.

We apply for the grant on your behalf. Once you've decided to go ahead with us, we make the application — you don't fill anything in. You'll get an email from the grant scheme asking you to confirm you're happy for us to apply for you, and you'll normally need to supply some ID. That's a check that you're a genuine customer. Everything else is handled at our end.

Quieter than most people expect — about the level of a fridge or a dishwasher. In practice you can hardly tell they're on; we normally have to stand in front of one to see whether the fan's even turning. Where it goes matters as much as the unit itself: correct siting is part of the MCS standards, and it's also what keeps the noise off your neighbours. It's one of the conditions of the permitted development rules that let a heat pump be installed without planning permission — so it's planned properly at survey stage, not guessed at.
