The process

Booking a service or repair, start to finish.

01

Get in touch

Call, WhatsApp, or fill out the quick form and tell us what's going on — you don't need to know exactly what's wrong, just what you've noticed.

02

Book a visit

We'll find a time that works for you, usually within a few days, and confirm what to expect before we arrive.

03

Service or repair

A full check or diagnostic on site, with the fix carried out there and then wherever possible — whether we installed the system or someone else did.

04

Report or explanation

For a service, you'll get a full written report with photos. For a repair, we'll fix it on the spot where we can — otherwise you'll get a clear report of what's needed, parts or alterations, with the return visit booked in before we leave.

Looking for a new installation instead?

A new installation runs online estimate → on-site survey → fixed-price quote → install → commission and handover. Three to four days on site for a straight changeover, longer if the radiators need upgrading too.

Barrie, the Heat Pump Biker, sitting on his motorbike

Why a biker

The bike isn't a gimmick.

Founded by Barrie Summers — 12+ years in renewables, trained by Mitsubishi, Vaillant and Stiebel Eltron — and yes, that's his motorbike parked outside most job sites. It started as the quickest way to get to site visits without sitting in traffic. It stayed because it suits how the work gets done: no fuss, no wasted time, straight to the job.

Every job still gets the same thing: a proper look at what's actually going on, honest advice, and paperwork done right — whether that's a service, a repair, or a full install. The bike just means arriving early.

Caught early

A proper service catches problems before they're expensive.

Efficiency drifts and parts wear — and plenty of systems were never set up properly to begin with. Most of it doesn't show up until your bill does. A full service checks pressures, controls, connections and the pressure relief valves properly, not just a quick look and a sticker.

Reliable heating

Warm, consistent, and no surprises on the bill.

A properly designed and installed heat pump means reliable heating you can depend on — lower running costs, and the confidence that it's been done right.

Ongoing care

We don't disappear once it's running.

Servicing, tweaks and support whenever you need them — whether we installed your system or you inherited it from someone else. A heat pump is only as good as the care it gets in year two, three, and beyond.

The bit that gets told wrong

Heat pumps work in almost any property.

The idea that your house has to be a well-insulated new build is the most persistent piece of wrong information about heat pumps, and it simply isn't true. Most UK homes have been brought up to decent double glazing, windows and doors, and that is usually enough. Two of the systems we look after are in converted chapels — one in South Bristol, one in the Forest of Dean.

The variable is the heating system, not the building. A heat pump can be sized perfectly for a house and still run badly, because the radiators and pipework were left exactly as the old boiler had them. Most of a heat pump's efficiency comes from the heating system being sized correctly for the heat each room actually needs.

The physics is straightforward: lower the temperature of the water going through a radiator and you need more surface area to put the same heat into the room. A radiator that was fine on a hot gas or oil system may not be big enough for a low-temperature one. That is what a room-by-room heat loss survey is for, and it is the part of the job that decides how well the system runs for the next twenty years. It is the spine of how we approach a new installation and radiator and system work alike.

“Whoever you go with for your heat pump, make sure they're doing the design calculations properly — the room-by-room heat loss that tells you the size of the radiators, the heat pump and the pipes. Whether you work with us or someone else, make sure it's someone that does the job properly.”

What we tell every customer

Where a heat pump isn't the right call, it is almost never the house or the technology — it is budget, or how much disruption a home can take.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Up to £9,000 off with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

The scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump — or £9,000 if you're replacing an oil or LPG boiler off the gas grid (England, from July 2026). Installations are carried out under an MCS umbrella scheme, which applies for the grant on your behalf — the paperwork's handled for you. Get in touch and we'll walk you through eligibility.

“Barrie did a great job replacing my ancient leaking radiator system with a new reliable one that more efficiently distributes the heat from my air source heat pump around my quirky 1740s house. The work was clean, tidy and the old radiators taken away.”
David · Mitcheldean
“Barrie has always taken the time to understand the system as a whole, diagnose problems carefully, and explain clearly what is going on… pressure-related issues that have needed proper understanding rather than guesswork.”

FAQs

Questions, answered.

What services do you offer? +
Heat Pump Biker specialises in heat pump servicing, maintenance and repairs — plus air source heat pump and underfloor heating installations. Whether your system needs a check-up, something's gone wrong, or you're starting from scratch, you're covered.
How often should I service my heat pump? +
Most manufacturers recommend an annual service to keep the system running efficiently and to keep your warranty valid. If Heat Pump Biker is looking after yours, we'll send a reminder when it's due.
What's included in a service? +
A full manufacturer-standard check of electrical connections, filters, controls, pressures and settings — plus your unvented hot water cylinder: expansion vessel, pressure relief and safety valves, included as standard. You'll get a full written photo report of what was checked and anything worth keeping an eye on.
Do you service heat pumps you didn't install? +
Yes — most systems serviced were installed by someone else. Trained on Mitsubishi, Vaillant and Stiebel Eltron systems, with other brands considered too; if anything's outside what can be safely serviced, you'll be told honestly rather than guessed at.
What if my heat pump breaks down? +
Get in touch by phone or WhatsApp for a fast response. Most faults can be diagnosed on the first visit, and you'll always get a clear explanation of what's wrong and what it'll take to fix before any work starts.
How much does servicing cost? +
A one-off annual service is £228 including VAT (£190 +VAT) — heat pump and unvented hot water cylinder together, with a full photo report. Repairs are priced from a published rate card: £150 (£125 +VAT) for the callout and first hour, then £51 (£42.50 +VAT) per half hour — you'll never pay more than £360 (£300 +VAT) for a half day or £660 (£550 +VAT) for a full day. See what's included.
Can I get a grant towards a new heat pump? +
Yes — up to £9,000. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £7,500 towards an air source heat pump installation — or £9,000 if you're replacing an oil or LPG boiler off the gas grid (England, from July 2026). Installations are carried out under an MCS umbrella scheme, which applies for the grant on your behalf. Get in touch for a walkthrough of eligibility.
How much does a new installation cost? +
Air source heat pump installations start from £12,500, depending on the size of your home and the system it needs. With the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant taken off — £7,500, or £9,000 if you're replacing an oil or LPG boiler off the gas grid — that brings a typical install down to around £3,500–£5,000, about the same as replacing a boiler. The online estimate is free. The on-site survey is £180 inc. VAT (£150 +VAT) and comes off your installation price — that's what gives you an exact, fixed-price quote, instead of a ballpark guess on the day.
Do I pay VAT on a heat pump installation? +
No — air source heat pump installations are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, after which the rate goes to 5%. If other work is needed to make the system right — new radiators, or a complete new heating system — that can be zero-rated too, provided it is part of the same installation contract rather than a separate job months later. It is one of the better reasons to do the heating system at the same time instead of waiting to see how the heat pump performs. The detail is set out in HMRC's guidance.
Are heat pumps noisy? +
Honestly, you can hardly tell they're on. Modern units are so quiet that you usually have to stand right in front of one — watching to see if the fan's even turning — to know it's running. Correct siting away from bedroom windows and boundaries still gets planned for during the survey, but noise is one worry heat pumps have genuinely left behind.
Do you charge more in December? +
December is the busiest month of the year for heating breakdowns, so it works a little differently. Customers on the right care plan get priority breakdown response with no seasonal uplift — ever. For everyone else, a seasonal premium applies during December: £198 (£165 +VAT) for the callout and first hour, with labour billed at time-and-a-quarter. It's how we keep December capacity for the people who need it most — see the care plans.
How do I get started? +
Whether it's a service, a repair, or a new installation, message us on WhatsApp, give us a ring, or use the booking form and tell us what you need. For servicing and repairs you'll usually be booked straight in. For a new installation the online estimate is free; the on-site survey is £180 inc. VAT (£150 +VAT) and comes off your installation price, and that's what gives you an exact fixed-price quote.
What makes you different? +
Heat Pump Biker combines specialist heat pump know-how with a personal touch — manufacturer-trained, riding to the job, with honest advice, published pricing, and every service covering the hot water cylinder with a full photo report. Every new installation is backed by a 2‑year workmanship guarantee, in line with MCS standards.
How can I contact you? +
Phone or WhatsApp on 0330 043 6253, or email info@heatpumpbiker.com — happy to answer any questions.
